Security personnel manning the entrance to the Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal Tourism City have blocked dozens of people who had turned up to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru’s coronation anniversary.
Today Saturday, King Oyo is marking 25 years since he ascended onto the throne as the King of Tooro. Normally, thousands of people from Tooro and abroad throng the palace to celebrate the coronation anniversary that is locally known as Empaango.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, entrance to the palace has been highly restricted to only those with invitation letters. Journalists, kingdom ministers and other dignitaries including from the United Nations-UN were blocked by police until they produced the invitation letters.
Those who did not have the hard copies of the letters with them were compelled to show soft copies on their phones. However, all other people who could not be identified were asked to leave immediately.
“How can they fail to give invitation letters to Batooro here but manage to send them to people in Kampala?” Rose Kabasiita, one of those who were turned away complained.
Meanwhile, those who made it inside of the palace were advised to adhere to the COVID-19 guidelines like handwashing and wearing of facemasks. The event started with service led by Bishop Reuben Kisembo of Ruwenzori Diocese.
